Meet Doug “Dougie” Wetzel pictured above with his father, Fred. Dougie grew up in Greenville, Ohio where he truly met a live elephant when he went outside to play in 1954. Dougie went inside to tell his mother, Lavonne. Thinking her son simply had an overactive imagination, she responded that he should go outside and play with it. The elephant had, in fact, escaped from the Mills Brothers Circus and ended up in Dougie’s yard.
After meeting the elephant, Doug went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the Ohio State University in 1972 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Kentucky in 1975. He married his best friend, Annette, in 1973 and they raised 2 genuine, capable daughters, Langley and Larkin. He resides in Owensboro, KY where he enjoys reading, traveling, hunting, fishing, and college football. Every time Dougie returns to his childhood home, he always checks to see if there is an elephant in the yard.
